Join Me in Honoring Maurine McFather
On her 60th birthday, our mother, Maurine McFather, received a call from her doctor and heard the words no woman should, "We see something on your mammogram." My family had flown into Houston to surprise her at dinner that evening, and she didn't say a word about that call. Two months later, she received her diagnosis, and this time, I flew in to be there as she underwent her lumpectomy. Even now, I remember how my brothers, sister and I clung to hope that the doctors caught it early enough.
Mom was a 20-year survivor. The past 20 years haven't been the easiest for her, as her treatment led to other medical complications, but she was able see her two granddaughters and one grandson come into this world, she has been able to attend four grandsons' and one granddaughter's high school and four grandsons' college graduations, and celebrated her oldest grandson's marriage. All of us—her children, grandchildren and other family and friends—celebrate that the doctors did, indeed, catch her cancer early!
Sadly, Mom passed away May 20, 2017 from complications that originated with her breast cancer diagnosis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jon C. McFather, Sr., of League City, their younger daughter, Moira K. Farah of Houston, TX; sister, Hope V. Hargrove of League City, TX; and brother, Guy A. Telzer of La Marque, TX. She is survived by her children Geoffrey S. McFather (Karen) of Smithfield, VA; Elizabeth A. Buckley (Timothy) of Plano, TX; and Jon C. McFather, Jr. (Mary) of Dickinson, TX; and eight grandchildren, Foster S. McFather (Rosemarie) of Newport News, VA; Sean M. Buckley, Colin M. Buckley and Liam P. Buckley of Plano, TX; Quinn A. Farah of Honolulu, HI; Petty Officer Coulson A. Farah, USN; Emilia A. McFather and Lilianna M. McFather of Dickinson, TX.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held, Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Crowder Funeral Home, 1645 East Main Street, League City, TX. Maurine will be interred next to her late husband, Jon, at the Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery, 7301 Memorial Street, Hitchcock, TX.
Tribute and Memorial donations in honor of Maurine can made to the Susan G. Komen North Texas in their fight against Breast Cancer.
